FORMULA 1’S COMMITMENT TO A SUSTAINABLE FUTURE

Formula 1 has taken a significant step forward in its sustainability journey with the release of its first-ever Impact Report. The comprehensive 63-page document reveals the sport’s progress towards achieving the goals set out in its sustainability strategy. This includes a 13% reduction in its carbon footprint compared to 2018.

Sustainability: A Key Focus for Formula 1

Stefano Domenicali, President & CEO of Formula 1, emphasised the importance of sustainability to the sport. He stated, “Sustainability is one of the most important factors to us not only as a sport, but as a business. It is no longer enough for us to simply deliver great action and wheel-to-wheel racing on the track. We need to ensure that we are doing so in a sustainable way so our sport can thrive long into the future.”

Formula 1’s Net Zero Carbon Goal for 2030

In 2019, Formula 1 launched its sustainability strategy, setting a goal to achieve Net Zero Carbon by 2030. The sport committed to cutting carbon emissions by a minimum of 50% versus 2018.

This target was set using science from the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) and follows the guidance set by the Greenhouse Gas Protocol.

Sustainable Fuel and Logistics Innovations

The Impact Report highlights several environmental activities from 2023, showcasing the sport’s progress towards sustainability. All F2 and F3 cars trialled a 55% sustainable fuel in partnership with Aramco.

This is another step towards the use of 100% sustainable fuel in F1 cars by 2026.DHL’s biofuel-powered trucks reduced logistics-related carbon emissions by an average of 83% during the European season. This contributes to Formula 1’s efforts to reduce its carbon footprint.

Promoters Embrace Renewable Energy Sources

Over 75% of promoters used renewable energy sources to power aspects of their events in 2023, compared to 50% in 2022.

The Austrian Grand Prix reduced carbon emissions within the Paddock, Pit Lane, and broadcast areas by more than 90% in 2023.

The British Grand Prix was fully powered by green energy alternatives, including solar panels and Hydrotreated Vegetable Oil (HVO) fuel in temporary generators.

Formula 1’s Commitment to Diversity and Inclusion

The Impact Report also showcases Formula 1’s activities in promoting diversity and inclusion throughout 2023. The launch of F1 ACADEMY aims to discover and develop young female talent.

Initiatives like F1 ACADEMY Discover Your Drive and the Engineering Scholarship Programme support the next generation of motorsport professionals.

Formula 1 continued to create opportunities for people from underrepresented backgrounds. The sport works with partners such as Lewis Hamilton’s Mission 44 to create inspiring opportunities at Grands Prix around the world.

The Future of Sustainability in Formula 1

With the release of its first Impact Report, Formula 1 has demonstrated its commitment to sustainability and the progress made thus far.

As the sport continues to innovate and collaborate with teams, promoters, and partners, it remains focused on achieving its Net Zero Carbon goal by 2030. Formula 1 aims to leave a legacy of positive change wherever it races.

The road ahead for sustainability in Formula 1 is clear. The sport will continue to push boundaries, develop new technologies, and inspire change both on and off the track.

As a global platform with over 700 million fans, Formula 1 recognises its responsibility to drive sustainability forward and create a lasting impact for generations to come.
