40,000 FORD BRONCO SPORT, ESCAPE SUVS RECALLED FOR FIRE RISK

  • Ford has issued a recall for 2022 Ford Escape and 2022–2023 Bronco Sport SUVs that are equipped with the base 1.5-liter three-cylinder engine.
  • The recall covers 42,652 vehicles and stems from an issue with fuel injectors potentially cracking, which could potentially lead to a fire in the engine bay.
  • As a remedy, Ford will install a drain tube and update the appropriate software to include a leak detection.

Ford has recalled 42,652 Escape and Bronco Sport models that are equipped with the base 1.5-liter three-cylinder engine, as detailed by documents filed with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). The recall covers the 2022 Escape and 2022–2023 Bronco Sport. There is a potential that a fuel injector could crack. If that were to happen, fuel and/or fuel vapor may ignite, potentially causing a fire in the engine bay.

According to NHTSA documents, drivers could notice the problem if a leaking fuel injector might create an odor of gasoline inside and out of the vehicle's cabin. Dashboard warning lights may also alert drivers to the issue. Recall documents state that Ford is aware of five underhood fires in the recalled vehicles.

Owners of affected cars should have been notified via mail earlier this month, though if you are concerned your vehicle may be included in the warranty, you can check here. Owners whose vehicles are included in the recall are instructed to bring their cars to their local Ford dealer.

Dealers will install a new drain tube to allow fuel to escape from the cylinder head drain hole and away from surfaces that might cause combustion. The dealers will also update the appropriate software to detect a pressure drop in the fuel rail, disable the high-pressure fuel pump, lower the engine's power, and create a message in the instrument cluster to alert the driver to the issue.
